Egypt T-bill auction, 30 August 2005: 364-day at 9.98%, unchanged

At the Treasury bill auction dated 30 August 2005, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 91-day bill at 9.32% (down 8 basis points), the 182-day bill at 9.58% (down 22 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 9.98% (unchanged). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 10.3bn against EGP 4.0bn on offer, 258% of the amount sought, and EGP 2.1bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 8.17% to 12.08%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 12.39%, so the government is paying 240 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 109,984 after 12 months: EGP 9,984 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 832 a month.

That is EGP 3 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 4,791 on the 182-day bill (6 months), EGP 2,330 on the 91-day bill (3 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
