Egypt T-bill auction, 28 June 2005: 364-day at 9.10%, down 70 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 28 June 2005, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 182-day bill at 8.39% (down 81 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 9.10% (down 70 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 9.4bn against EGP 2.0bn on offer, 471% of the amount sought, and EGP 2.0bn was accepted.

At 9.10%, the 364-day rate is the lowest in the 33 auctions of the past year.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.72%, so the government is paying 163 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 109,096 after 12 months: EGP 9,096 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 758 a month.

That is EGP 701 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 4,197 on the 182-day bill (6 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
