Egypt T-bill auction, 10 May 2005: 364-day at 10.40%, down 26 bps

At the Treasury bill auction dated 10 May 2005, the Central Bank of Egypt cleared the 182-day bill at 10.03% (down 28 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 10.40% (down 26 basis points). The rate shown is the weighted average yield of accepted bids.

Demand was strong: bids totalled EGP 8.6bn against EGP 1.7bn on offer, 509% of the amount sought, and EGP 1.7bn was accepted.

Over the past year the 364-day rate has ranged from 9.53% to 12.39%.

A year earlier the 364-day bill cleared at 10.72%, so the government is paying 33 basis points less than twelve months ago.

Put EGP 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back EGP 110,396 after 12 months: EGP 10,396 in interest before any withholding tax, about EGP 866 a month.

That is EGP 260 less than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.

For shorter money: EGP 5,015 on the 182-day bill (6 months).

The government pays the full amount at maturity; the risk is Egypt’s government not paying, and the money is locked until then.
