Kenya T-bill auction, 22 January 2024: 91-day at 16.235%, up 9 bps
At the Treasury bill auction dated 22 January 2024, the Central Bank of Kenya cleared the 91-day bill at 16.235% (up 9 basis points), the 182-day bill at 16.301% (up 11 basis points) and the 364-day bill at 16.492% (up 10 basis points).
The auction was fully subscribed: bids totalled KES 35.3bn against KES 24.0bn on offer, a subscription rate of 147%. The government accepted KES 34.1bn, or 97% of what was bid.
The 91-day paper drew the most interest relative to its size, at 639% subscribed.
At 16.235%, the 91-day rate is the highest in the 52 auctions of the past year.

Put KES 100,000 into the 364-day bill at this auction and you get back KES 114,018 after 12 months: KES 14,018 in interest after 15% withholding tax (KES 16,492 before), about KES 1,168 a month.
That is KES 85 more than the same money would have earned at the previous auction.
