Kenya bond auction, 22 July 2024: FXD1/2024/010 at 16.592%

The Central Bank of Kenya's bond auction dated 22 July 2024 was a re-opening of FXD1/2008/020 and FXD1/2024/010.

Bids came to KES 14.7bn against KES 30.0bn on offer (49% subscribed), and the Treasury accepted KES 9.8bn.

FXD1/2008/020 cleared at 18.290%, against a 13.750% coupon, with 3.9 years to maturity. Its previous sale, on 12 December 2022, priced at 13.830%, so the yield is up 446 basis points.

FXD1/2024/010 cleared at 16.592%, against a 16.000% coupon, with 9.6 years to maturity. Its previous sale, on 13 May 2024, priced at 16.227%, so the yield is up 37 basis points.

At this auction KES 100,000 of face value cost about KES 102,352 (price 102.352 per 100), and the yield that implies is 16.59% a year. The coupon is 16.00%: KES 16,000 a year on KES 100,000 of face value, paid in two halves, KES 13,600 after 15% withholding tax.

Held to maturity (2034-03-13), that is about KES 131,104 in coupons, plus KES -2,352 loss between what you paid and the KES 100,000 repaid; roughly KES 128,751 in all after tax.
